The few students who needed to finish their clay slabs were able to finish them at the beginning of class before I got there. What can I say? I was fifteen minutes late because I seriously forgot it was a Wednesday. Thank you Uber for getting me to the school!
When I got there, the teacher was talking about their next assignment: designing the school's yearbook cover. The requirements were that the cover had to be full color and it had to say the school's name, yearbook, and 2017-2018. She also suggests that the students follow a theme for their cover instead of working at random and that they use block or bubble letters instead of regular letters so that they stand out more. The students were excited that they were going to be designing yearbook covers and that excitement continued to grow when they were shown examples from previous years.
The plan for today was for the students to work on their rough drafts, or their "sloppy copy". They set to work with their pencils and printer paper. Many students drew inspiration from previous years. Several asked to see a picture of the school so that they could draw it on the cover, which the teacher gladly complied with by pulling up some google images pictures of the school and displaying them on the projector screen.
At one point, the teacher told the students that they could share their ideas with the others at their tables. Well, one boy replied that he didn't want to share his idea because he didn't want others to steal it. This sparked a conversation about copying and plagiarism and how to not do that. Inevitably, there were some designs that had similarities and the students for the most part talked about their ideas or lack thereof.
Overall the students had some solid ideas and were excited for the project. Several were so thrilled that they came up and told me their ideas and asked me questions! In the end they had to take their designs home to finish so that they could work on the final copy next class.
